About Me

Dr Sanjay Kumar Chugh, a.k.a Dr Sanjay Chugh is a world renowned Interventional Cardiologist and pioneer of Transradial Angiography and Angioplasty, a painless technique performed through the wrist , and also of distal transradial angiography and angioplasty which is performed through the back of the hand.

He is currently Associate Director and Senior Consultant, Interventional Cardiology at Narayana Healthcare Superspeciality Hospital, Gurugram. Dr Chugh has over thirty nine years’ of experience in Clinical Cardiology, twenty seven years of which have been in Interventional Cardiology. Dr. Chugh has performed over 25,000 cardiac invasive procedures which include Percutaneous Coronary Interventions, both transfemoral and transradial (over 7000 transradial angioplasty), Over 2500 distal transradial coronary procedures; Acute Myocardial Infarction Interventions, Primary PTCAs for STEMI (Heart Attacks), Peripheral Angioplasties, Containment/Embolic protection devices (IVC Filters), Valvuloplasty, ASD closures and groin closures.

He is also well versed in Clinical and Emergency Cardiology, CCU Care and non-invasive Cardiology including echocardiography and stress testing.

ANGIOPLASTY THROUGH HAND COULD SAVE MORE LIVES – says expert

“Opening of blocked heart vessels (arteries) that supply the heart muscle is called Angioplasty. Blockages in these arteries reduce the blood supply to the heart, causing chest pain (angina). Sudden complete blockage can lead to a heart attack, in which the heart muscles start dying. Therefore, it becomes imperative to open these blocked arteries quickly. Conventionally this is done through an artery in the leg,” said Dr Asif Hasan, Head of the Department of Cardiology, Aligarh Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University.

“The new route to the heart goes through the artery of the “wrist” (hence called “radial”). I also use the back of the patient’s hand to perform their angioplasty (distaltransradial angioplasty) which we found to be equally successful in our Data Star study , published recently in the Indian Heart Journal.
